Police response to alarm system calls

At our last CPLC meeting, one of our members inquired about the protocol for the police re; alarm system calls. Toronto Police responded with the following:
Alarm Verification – Notice of Amendment – Verification Process
The Toronto Police Service has conducted a review of current verification processes of alarm activations. Consistent with the future implementation of verified response (future date), the current verification process requirement has been updated.
The following verification processes will be accepted for burglar alarm activations effective January 1, 2016:
- Audio device;
- Video device;
- Multiple zone activations; or
- An eyewitness (i.e. private security or person at scene);
- Key holder notification.
Burglar alarm activations include, but are not limited to, alarm distinctions described as burglar, motion, door, window, glass break, etcetera.
Please note that panic alarm activations will NOT be included in the required verification process. Panic alarm activations include, but are not limited to, alarm distinctions described as panic, hold-up, duress, emergency button, etcetera.
Verified alarm activations and panic alarm activations will be treated as high priority calls for service and will be dispatched to the first available police field unit. Police response will continue to be determined by the nature, demand, priorities and resources available at the time of the request for service.

CPLC recognizes that crime prevention is a key component of community mobilization and that strong community partnerships are an essential element of any crime reduction strategy. The Divisional Policing Support Unit educates and assists community members to be more aware of their own safety, and to be proactive in the reduction of crime and eliminating the opportunity for crime.
"We aim to create meaningful partnerships through trust, understanding, shared knowledge and effective community mobilization to maintian safety and security in our communities" – 22 Division CPLC
The Crime Prevention Coordinator at the Divisional Policing Support Unit provides resource information on crime prevention and supports the work of Divisional Crime Prevention officers.
For the Toronto Police Service, community mobilization is a way to bring all the people in your neighbourhood – residents, businesses, community and government services, and the police – together to plan and carry out activities that will resolve crime and disorder issues. What that really means, is that everyone has to commit to work together to improve your neighbourhood.
